Today we are taking 1940s sweets into our reminiscence workshop as we researched and found food can be a successful at triggering memories from times when certain foods were tasted.
Take a look at the sweets we have!
Capturing memories from the source of the self
Hello everyone,
We are Beyond Memory Theatre Company. We are a reminiscence theatre company that works with elderly women with dementia to create work around their memories.
We are currently working with women at Hartrigg Oaks nursing home, looking at their memories surrounding the wartime effort and significant women within their lives.
All our work and preparation will be documented on this blog, feel free to read and ENJOY!! π
During a recent workshop we gave our participants paper and pens, and asked them to freely write down or draw favourite items, landscapes or people that span from a memory. Once talking about them we realised a lot of the items centred on food. As food is associated as being a social stimulus, we decided that during film week we would also bring a selection of the food they had mentioned to help them reminisce. Such as dandelion and burdock, pork pies, branston pickle and banoffee pie were just some of the things we took! This all went down a treat!
We are currently producing material for our performance in May.
Through workshops at Hartrigg Oaks we have gained ideas in topics such as marriage, fashion, men and travelling.
Our workshops are including film, music and craft work. One of our recent workshops included watching clips of films from the 1940s and 1950s. This stimulated alot of conversation with the women around how they felt films and media had changed through the decades; how intimacy is shown more today and how fashion has allowed more flesh to be shown.
Beyond Memory Theatre Company β Capturing memories from the source of the self.
Beyond Memory are a theatre company who use the techniques of reminiscence theatre to create poignant performances for all in society. We work with women as we feel we can relate to them more being an all-female theatre company; this avoids giving a false interpretation of the male gender and generation. Our themes throughout our work are health, society and senses, and how they affect, yet support peopleβs history, life and memory.
During a previous project our theatre company was formed; creating a reminiscence performance exploring womenβs roles adventuring through 1940s wartime to present day. This was our first experience of using memory as a stimulus for performance, therefore sparking ideas for future projects.
Our aims are toβ¦
All of our work, findings and creative material made will result in an end performance for the residents to reminisce within and for outer communities and societies to experience.
Rebecca Fenwick, Emma Johnson, Nicola Patrick and Laura Mercer.
We are all students at York St John university studying BA Hons Theatre.
Hiya, im Rebecca Fenwick π I am a Geordie and would class myself as the silly member within the company. I have always been interested in applied theatre and would like to pursue a career in early years theatre or theatre within education. Being part of Beyond Memory is allowing me to explore another aspect of applied theatre and extend my knowledge in community theatre practice.
Hi, im Emma Johnson π I am the chatty member of the company, i like to see myself as a people person. I have always wanted to promote applied theatre and its power in as many different ways as possible so this year i am currently working within two very different areas of the practice; one being with young school children and the other being elderly women. When i first came to university i always wanted to be a drama teacher but through the combination of two things, one being very indecisive and two, seeing the scope drama has i now cannot decide.
hey, im nicki patrick =] , im the scouser of the group !Β i am hoping to have a future in reminiscence theatre and take beyond memory to the next level ! being in beyond memory has given me the opportunity to be part of a reminiscence theatre company and develop my skills in the area !! so come and see our show ! we promise you will have lots of fun !
Hey π i’m Laura Mercer and well i’m the deedahh of the group :). I have always had an interest in working with the very youngest of children to the elderly, as I believe they have so much to give and applied theatre is a great way to bring people together and create theatre that’s true for them. We are all about having fun and creating a relaxed atmosphere to share our experiences and stories that we can all relate to, which will be shown within our performance. π
